In recent years, Spanish Town has unearthed some of Jamaica’s most talented artistes, including Grammy winner Koffee, reggae star Chronixx, and dancehall heavyweight Govana. Another young talent is looking to add to the Old Capital’s rich musical legacy, as she seeks her big break in the industry.

July Bailey, although currently based in Atlanta, is looking to shake things up locally.

“I knew from very early that I wanted to be in the music business. After completing high school and migrating to the United States, I became more impassioned with the art form and continued to hone my skill set,” she said in a media release.

July described 2019 as the turning point in her career, stating that she unveiled her first two professional recordings, titled Bad Yaadie and Paypa. “Those two tracks would go on to forge a path for my official introduction to the industry as a recording artiste.”

She added, “I feel like you can’t run or hide from your destiny, and in my eyes, music was always mine. Now that I have these two singles out and people are getting familiar with me, I want to make an even bigger impact.”

And she may be about to do that as she has garnered favourable responses from fellow entertainers. Artistes such as Aidonia, Busy Signal, Mr Easy and Afro B all contracted the singer to be their opening act at shows in the past. July Bailey considers herself a dancehall artiste but says her range allows her to dabble in other genres as she pleases. She described her latest single, Nuh Tell Nobody, as “dancehall soul”.

“This song is dancehall but with so much more feelings and emotions. I feel like as artistes there is so much more that we can do with the genre, and I want to show just how versatile we can be,” she said. “I’m not so much concerned about the hype of it all. I care about refining my artistry because dancehall is a conveyor belt, music on a whole is. You can be the hottest thing at breakfast, and by dinner, you’re a ‘has-been’ so we have to find ways to keep it interesting. I put out music that I can look back, and the fans could reflect on in 10 years and still be just as impressed by. Longevity, that’s the aim.”
