It’s been nearly four years since fans heard any new music from Brandy, but now, as she gears up for the release of a new album next week, she reveals that it wasn’t easy to get back into the studio. In fact, she was a little nervous.
Brandy told Billboard.com recently that after all the drama she endured when she made headlines for a car accident that ended with the other driver dying, music was her release.
“Once you get into a zone, it’s hard to come out,” said the singer. “What I experienced in the past couple of years was tough, but I had to face it and find the strength to move forward. Connecting back with music has definitely helped me through everything. Once I got back in the studio, the butterflies went away.”
According to Brandy, she had been keeping a daily journal, and as she began to become more aware of her feelings, it helped inspire her new lyrics.
“Getting in touch with how I felt made me want to sing about it,” Brandy says. “This entire album is about life and what we all experience — that we’re not alone and sometimes need to be uplifted.”
These past couple years were the fuel that helped her craft her forthcoming Human album, with the help of past collaborator Rodney Jerkins. He worked with the singer on her 1998 sophomore album Never Say Never.
The producer says that they clicked right off the bat.
“We have great musical chemistry,” he told Billboard. ” ‘Departed’ was the first song we did together after reuniting. And that says a lot: Most of the time you don’t find the single until you’re at the end of a project.”
According to Billboard, Brandy plans to tour in support of the album. However, a tour has yet to be announced.
Human is due in stores next Tuesday, December 9.
