After midnight, the party was still relatively scanty. But, as time progressed, the venue became jam-packed, hardly leaving any space to move.
Getting people in the party mood, Renaissance played Wayne Wonder and Baby Cham’s Warm Jamaica Christmas Time, which was quite appropriate for the season. Eventually, songs like Innocent Crew’s Mission Impossible and Chaka Demus and Pliers’ Murder She Wrote, were also played. But it was Bounty Killer’s Who Send Dem that got the first set of ‘forwards’.
ZJ Rush came next and he was certainly in a rush. He played popular songs in very quick succession. Very often he played only two lines out of each song before switching to another, which irritated some of the patrons. He played a slew of Sizzla songs including Dry Cry and Karate. Dennis Brown’s Love And Hate was also a hit.
Throughout his set, he gave patrons a taste of recent songs like Chan Dizzy’s Nuh Strange Face and DJ Khaled’s All I Do Is Win. When he played the soundtracks for shows like Ghost Busters, SpongeBob Squarepants and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, he made people either dance or laugh. He somewhat redeemed himself when he played raunchy dancehall songs that had patrons dancing up a storm.
A huge ‘forward’
Renaissance returned with more recent music like Rihanna’s What’s My Name. Later, they had people in a frenzy with Vybz Kartel songs like Bicycle and Tek. In no time patrons really got in the dancing mood as they lifted their hands to Elephant Man’s Nuh Junjo and Willie Bounce. But they went back to ‘daggering’ with RDX’s Bend Ova.
Seanizzle’s ‘One Day’ rhythm went over well with patrons, while I-Octane’s No Love Inna Dem got a huge ‘forward’ and screams greeted Popcaan’s Dream. Throughout the set, older songs were also spun in the mix.
Rush played a more lively set his second time around, as he found favour with K’naan’s Waving Flag and Ding Dong’s Holiday, which had patrons ‘skipping’.
