“A Man From Clarendon Jamaica West Indies My father @rasdenroymorgan Your works Live On #rastafari. Help me Celebrate Him His Life And His Music. He worked up to the Last Day UNBELIEVABLE.” This was one of the posts made by Reggae singer Gramps Morgan, announcing the death of his father, Denroy Morgan.
Denroy Morgan had been battling cancer and passed away on Thursday night at home in Lawrenceville, Georgia. He was 76 years old.
Morgan’s death comes two months prior to the scheduled release of a new album Divine Destiny, which will be released on April 22, under the auspices of VPAL Music distribution.
A statement posted on Instagram read:
“It is out of sincere love that we share that our beloved father and patriarch, The Honorable Bishop Ras Denroy Morgan has ascended. Daddy has been our light, our source of love and joy all our lives. Our family thanks you in advance for your overwhelming love and support and we ask for your continued prayers as we go through this process. We also ask that you please respect our privacy during this time of healing. Thank You!”
Morgan fathered 30 children, had 104 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. His children formed several groups including the Grammy-award winning roots and culture band, Morgan Heritage as well as the Dancehall/Hip-Hop group LMS.
Morgan is originally from May Pen, Clarendon Jamaica. He also lived in Spanish Town before migrating to Brooklyn, New York at the age of 19, where he established himself as a musician. He played Reggae and Rocksteady with the Mad Creators band in the 1960s. He was also a part of a New York City reggae band in the 1970s called the Black Eagles which released the album Warning, in 1978. He eventually went solo and in 1981 he released a hit I’ll Do Anything for You, which was a fusion of Disco, R&B, Rap, and Reggae styles. This hit was at number nine on Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop charts and resulted in a two-album deal with RCA Records in 1984
