Controversial deejay Vybz Kartel claims the police are attempting to smear his reputation.
The deejay was listed as a ‘person of interest’ on Tuesday by the Jamaica Constabulary Force and was expected to turn himself in yesterday.
“This is not the first time that the police force has attempted to smear my reputation,” said the deejay yesterday morning in a statement sent to THE STAR.
He said that the cops, like they had done previously when he was arrested, were acting “based on half-baked assumptions and ridiculous rumours.”
He further stated that; “as it happened then, I know I will be exonerated once again.”
The deejay said that he had nothing to fear based on the latest development. “Fear makes men believe the worst, but I believe in our justice system, however, flawed it may be, and in the end, I will be vindicated. I remain confident that the security forces will act with professionalism in this matter.”
Kartel, who’s real name is Adidja Palmer, was among six persons listed by the St Catherine South police as major person of interest. The other persons of interest are: Omar Lawrence, Seymour Johnson, Paul Smith, Oneil Myurrie and Damion Perry. The release stated, “the St Catherine South police is asking these major persons of interest to turn themselves in at any police station in Portmore or any police station across the island.”
When THE STAR asked the controversial entertainer how this questioning episode would affect his career, he didn’t seem to expect negative reactions. He said, “my career has always been filled with accusation and tribulations. So we will overcome as always.”
Kartel could possibly spend a few days to weeks in jail, which could see him missing upcoming performances in Portmore, St Ann, Nassau in The Bahamas and even Reggae Sumfest in Montego Bay.
However, while this is a possibility, he encourages his fans who might miss his performances to continue to support his Portmore Empire, which consists of fellow entertainers Jah Vinci, Popcaan, Gaza Slim, among others.
Up until press time late last night, checks with the Greater Portmore (Hundred Man) Police Station revealed that Kartel had still not turned himself in.
