A number of local artistes will be releasing or have already released their respective albums this summer, but many of these albums seem to not have significant effects on the Jamaican people. It is a fact that music sales in Jamaica are minimal and reasonable to suggest that the masses simply does not care much about the ‘release of an album’ and so one wonders just how much does the Jamaican music lovers know about the importance of their favourite artiste(s) earning an album deal in his career.
Last November roots reggae artiste Fantan Mojah released his second album on a major label. The 16 track album produced by Greensleeves Records is a compilation of inspiring roots music. The album “Stronger†received ratings among the 10 best released in 2008 on Amazon.com. Fantan Mojah’s debut album “Hail the King†also received rave reviews and is said to be ‘a rich, inspiring and healthy tour de force of roots music’. If an album release does not have any significant impact on the people then automatically the disinterest of the people unfortunately kills the momentum necessary to increase its sales. The recorded sales of an album on the day of its release usually determine its popularity, however the local recorded sales of any album does not determine its popularity internationally.
For an artiste to release even one album through out his musical career is his single most important milestone of achievement. Fantan Mojah’s career soared to new heights since the release of his first album., the demand for his music increased his repertoire and heightened his chances for live performances so clearly, the release of an album enhances booking opportunities and boosts music sale.
Internationally, Fanton Mojah continues to pull large crowds and delivers crowd pleasing performances for his fans. Often times his audience demands more than his billed 90 minutes set and of course he give in to their demands to further secure his place among the list of International Reggae acts this country produces.
Having two (2) or more albums released on a major label sets Fantan Mojah and other artistes with similar or greater achievements apart, from those who fail to attract a record deal and give rise to continuous demands for their live performances, record sales and worldwide popularity.
