A few weeks ago, Tanya Stephens delivered a stellar performance before a packed house. Last week, it was Tessanne and Tami Chynn’s turn as the fans came out for a rip-roaring session. Tonight, the inimitable reggae superstar will have to decide if she will be Marion Hall, the slightly more restrained performer, or the notorious Lady Saw, the sizzling diva of raunch.
Which one will turn up is anybody’s guess. Chances are, her fans won’t care. Tickets are available at Pulse and at Studio 38. Advance purchase price is $1,000, available up to midday today. Thereafter tickets are $1,500. Event hotlines are 361-0574 and 960-0049.
The Pulse Fashion Fix, featuring the last nine contestants standing in the current Pulse Model Search Petite Reality TV show, will also be presented. The Pulse Fashion Fix will start at 9 p.m. Earlier in the evening, Studio 38 regulars can sip two-for-one drink specials.
Since Studio 38 opened its doors 14 months ago, the chic bistro on Trafalgar Road has presented such old-school and new-school luminaries as Tanya Stephens, Beres Hammond, Toots Hibbert, Ken Boothe, the late great Gregory Isaacs (who gave his last performance at Studio 38), John Holt, Freddie McGregor, Tarrus Riley, Beenie Man, George Nooks, Leroy Sibblies, URoy, Pluto Shervington, Ernie Smith, Yellowman, Pinchers, Admiral Bailey, and many more.
Many Firsts
Known as the Queen of Dancehall, Lady Saw, a St Mary native, is the first female deejay to win a Grammy Award and to be certified as a triple-platinum artiste. She is also the first woman to headline dancehall shows outside her native Jamaica. Her new label, Divas Records, was launched in January last year. On September 7, 2010, through new partnership with Toasting Music, alongside her label Diva Records, distributed by Fontana/Universal, the Queen of the Dancehall released her first album since 2007, called My Way.
Party Till December, the first single off the album, received heavy radio rotation and the video was nominated for Video of the Year.
Among Lady Saw’s many achievements is a gold certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for Smile with Vitamin C. Lady Saw also received a triple-platinum certification from the RIAA for Underneath It All, her 2003 collaboration with No Doubt.
Also in 2003, Lady Saw earned a Grammy Award for Best Performance by a Duo or Group for her featured performance on Underneath It All, which reached number three on the United States Billboard Hot 100 chart.
