Just 17 years old, singjay Suga Dhon has a lot on her mind and she’s not afraid to express it. Take a listen to her song, “40”, and you will hear a fresh new talent with lyrics aplenty.

“40” is one of the 20-odd songs on the Green Concrete Riddim, a project produced by Florida-based Seltza Music Entertainment. It has songs by several dancehall heavyweights such as Sizzla, Norris Man and Turbulence.

On “40”, Suga Dhon sings about the importance of staying focused despite life’s challenges. The song, she says, has resonated with a number of her peers.

“A whole heap of people can relate to the song. Whole heap a people come to me and sey, ‘Yow, da song yah really touching, da song ya really mek mi sit down and meds’. So, the song can really do a lot and have a big impact,” she said.

Suga Dhon is from Portland, a parish in eastern Jamaica that has produced acts like Junior Murvin of “Police And Thieves” fame, and Louie Culture. She is currently in her final year of high school and aspires to be an entrepreneur.

While beating the books at Buff Bay High School, she also concentrates on developing her songwriting skills. Her inspiration comes from Chronic Law and Masicka, two of contemporary dancehall’s biggest acts.

“Dem man dey thing have feelings and meaning, a nuh jus’ violence. There’s more to it than just violence,” she said.

Born Jelisa Coke, Suga Dhon says music has always been part of her life. While attending primary school, she remembers beating desks, anything to satisfy her musical appetite; in 2020, she got her first taste of recording.

That experience was a big boost and Suga Dhon became even more determined to have a career in music.

“What I like most about recording is I get to express my feelings. Somebody can ask me a million times how mi feel and I don’t say anything. But jus’ give mi a ‘talkaphone’ and me’ll tell yuh how mi really feel.”
